State Department instructs: 'How to Identify Misinformation'
By Darren Weeks
The United States Department of State is the chief U.S. government agency charged with the task of implementing the United Nations agenda in America. And, as a part of the U.N. agenda, the U.S. State Department is also actively working to disarm every country of the world.
Those of us who are researchers and truth seekers work to expose the corrupt scheme to merge America into a single socialist state, comprised of many tightly-controlled communities, under the auspices of the United Nations.
Now, the State Department is fighting back.
In a resource section on the State Department website, the agency instructs members of the media on "how to identify misinformation".
Criteria for misinformation, as defined by the agency, include:
Does the story fit the pattern of a conspiracy theory?
Does the story fit the pattern of an "urban legend?"
Does the story contain a shocking revelation about a highly controversial issue?
Is the source trustworthy?
What does further research tell you?
The following are selective quotes, taken from the DOS website, dealing with identifying "misinformation":
"Does the story claim that vast, powerful, evil forces are secretly manipulating events? If so, this fits the profile of a conspiracy theory. Conspiracy theories are rarely true, even though they have great appeal and are often widely believed..."
"The U.S. military or intelligence community is a favorite villain in many conspiracy theories..."
"In his book 9/11: The Big Lie, French author Thierry Meyssan falsely claimed that no plane hit the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Instead, he claimed that the building had been struck by a cruise missile fired by elements within the U.S. government..."
"Is the story startlingly good, bad, amazing, horrifying, or otherwise seemingly 'too good' or 'too terrible' to be true? If so, it may be an 'urban legend.'..."
"AIDS, organ transplantation, international adoption, and the September 11 attacks are all new, frightening or, in some ways, discomforting topics. Such highly controversial issues are natural candidates for the rise of false rumors, unwarranted fears and suspicions. Another example of a highly controversial issue is depleted uranium, a relatively new armor-piercing substance that was used by the U.S. military for the first time during the 1991 Gulf War.
"There are many exaggerated fears about depleted uranium because people associate it with weapons-grade uranium or fuel-grade uranium, which are much more dangerous substances. When most people hear the word uranium, a number of strongly held associations spring to mind, including the atomic bomb, Hiroshima, nuclear reactors, radiation illness, cancer, and birth defects..."
"Another highly controversial issue is that of forbidden weapons, such as chemical or biological weapons. The United States is regularly, and falsely, accused of using these weapons..."
"Any highly controversial issue or taboo behavior is ripe material for false rumors and urban legends...."
"Certain websites, publications, and individuals are known for spreading false stories..."
"There are many conspiracy theory websites, which contain a great deal of unreliable information..."
"Extremist groups, such as splinter communist parties, often publish disinformation. This can be especially difficult to identify if the false allegations are published by front groups. Front groups purport to be independent, non-partisan organizations but actually controlled by political parties or groups..."
"The only way to determine whether an allegation is true or false is to research it as thoroughly as possible. Of course, this may not always be possible given publication deadlines and time pressures, but there is no substitute for thorough research, going back to the original sources. Using the Internet, many allegations can be fairly thoroughly researched in a matter of hours..."
We agree that everyone should do their own research. Frequently, you'll hear us urge our listeners and readers to do research and try to prove us wrong about our statements. It is the U.S. government that stands to lose when people do their own research. It is only by spending time reading and researching, can you learn enough to see through their lies.
The real misinformation specialists would like it to be believed that anyone who asks questions, or exposes real conspiracies is a disinformation agent. They understand that even though they give lip service to research, most "journalists" and individuals will see a conspiratorial accusation and immediately dismiss it as "conspiracy theory".
It is time for Americans everywhere to begin asking questions, and digging for documentable answers.
If the government wants to urge Americans everywhere to do their homework on the issues, we say bring it on! We welcome the contest.
When Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans on Monday, it could turn one of America's most charming cities into a vast cesspool tainted with toxic chemicals, human waste and even coffins released by floodwaters from the city's legendary cemeteries.
Experts have warned for years that the levees and pumps that usually keep New Orleans dry have no chance against a direct hit by a Category 5 storm.
That's exactly what Katrina was as it churned toward the city. With top winds of 165 mph and the power to lift sea level by as much as 28 feet above normal, the storm threatened an environmental disaster of biblical proportions, one that could leave more than 1 million people homeless.
"All indications are that this is absolutely worst-case scenario," Ivor van Heerden, deputy director of the Louisiana State University Hurricane Center, said Sunday afternoon.
The center's latest computer simulations indicate that by Tuesday, vast swaths of New Orleans could be under water up to 30 feet deep. In the French Quarter, the water could reach 20 feet, easily submerging the district's iconic cast-iron balconies and bars.
Estimates predict that 60 percent to 80 percent of the city's houses will be destroyed by wind. With the flood damage, most of the people who live in and around New Orleans could be homeless.
"We're talking about in essence having _ in the continental United States _ having a refugee camp of a million people," van Heerden said.
Aside from Hurricane Andrew, which struck Miami in 1992, forecasters have no experience with Category 5 hurricanes hitting densely populated areas.
"Hurricanes rarely sustain such extreme winds for much time. However we see no obvious large-scale effects to cause a substantial weakening the system and it is expected that the hurricane will be of Category 4 or 5 intensity when it reaches the coast," National Hurricane Center meteorologist Richard Pasch said.
As they raced to put meteorological instruments in Katrina's path Sunday, wind engineers had little idea what their equipment would record.
"We haven't seen something this big since we started the program," said Kurt Gurley, a University of Florida engineering professor. He works for the Florida Coastal Monitoring Program, which is in its seventh year of making detailed measurements of hurricane wind conditions using a set of mobile weather stations.
Experts have warned about New Orleans' vulnerability for years, chiefly because Louisiana has lost more than a million acres of coastal wetlands in the past seven decades. The vast patchwork of swamps and bayous south of the city serves as a buffer, partially absorbing the surge of water that a hurricane pushes ashore.
Experts have also warned that the ring of high levees around New Orleans, designed to protect the city from floodwaters coming down the Mississippi, will only make things worse in a powerful hurricane. Katrina is expected to push a 28-foot storm surge against the levees. Even if they hold, water will pour over their tops and begin filling the city as if it were a sinking canoe.
After the storm passes, the water will have nowhere to go.
In a few days, van Heerden predicts, emergency management officials are going to be wondering how to handle a giant stagnant pond contaminated with building debris, coffins, sewage and other hazardous materials.
"We're talking about an incredible environmental disaster," van Heerden said.
He puts much of the blame for New Orleans' dire situation on the very levee system that is designed to protect southern Louisiana from Mississippi River floods.
Before the levees were built, the river would top its banks during floods and wash through a maze of bayous and swamps, dropping fine- grained silt that nourished plants and kept the land just above sea level.
The levees "have literally starved our wetlands to death" by directing all of that precious silt out into the Gulf of Mexico, van Heerden said.
It has been 40 years since New Orleans faced a hurricane even comparable to Katrina. In 1965, Hurricane Betsy, a Category 3 storm, submerged some parts of the city to a depth of seven feet.
Since then, the Big Easy has had nothing but near misses. In 1998, Hurricane Georges headed straight for New Orleans, then swerved at the last minute to strike Mississippi and Alabama. Hurricane Lili blew herself out at the mouth of the Mississippi in 2002. And last year's Hurricane Ivan obligingly curved to the east as it came ashore, barely grazing a grateful city.

Flooding expected from Hurricane Katrina could wreak catastrophe on New Orleans, overwhelming its water and sewage systems, damaging its structures and leaving survivors in a bowl of toxic soup, a top hurricane expert said Sunday.
"We need to recognize we may be about to experience our equivalent of the Asian tsunami, in terms of the damage and the numbers of people that can be killed," said Ivor van Heerden, director of the Louisiana State University Public Health Research Center in Baton Rouge.
Some 25 feet of standing water is expected in many parts of the city -- almost twice the height of the average home -- and computer models suggest that more than 80 percent of buildings would be badly damaged or destroyed, he said. (Watch a report on the worst-case scenario)
Floodwaters from the east will carry toxic waste from the "Industrial Canal" area, nicknamed after the chemical plants there. From the west, floodwaters would flow through the Norco Destrehan Industrial Complex, which includes refineries and chemical plants, said van Heerden, who has studied computer models about the impact of a strong hurricane for four years.
"These chemical plants are going to start flying apart, just as the other buildings do," he predicted. "So, we have the potential for release of benzene, hydrochloric acid, chlorine and so on."
That could result in severe air and water pollution, he said.
In New Orleans, which lies below sea level, gas and diesel tanks are all located above ground for the same reason that bodies are buried above ground. In the event of a flood, "those tanks will start to float, shear their couplings, and we'll have the release of these rather volatile compounds," van Heerden added.
Because gasoline floats on water, "we could end up with some pretty severe and large -- area-wise -- fires."
"So, we're looking at a bowl full of highly contaminated water with contaminated air flowing around and, literally, very few places for anybody to go where they'll be safe."
He went further.
"So, imagine you're the poor person who decides not to evacuate: Your house will disintegrate around you. The best you'll be able to do is hang on to a light pole, and while you're hanging on, the fire ants from all the mounds -- of which there is two per yard on average -- will clamber up that same pole. And, eventually, the fire ants will win."
The levees intended to protect the city vary in height, from as low as 10 feet above sea level to about 14 feet, he said. They too are vulnerable, because they are made of earth, he said.
Disaster waiting to happen
Previous studies have suggested a catastrophic toll in lives and property if a major hurricane were to hit the New Orleans area, where about 1.3 million people live.
Walter Maestri, the emergency management chief in neighboring Jefferson Parish, said Hurricane Georges in 1998 could have killed as many as 44,000 people had it struck the city directly.
"The way it's described, we describe it here, is Lake Pontchartrain has now become Lake New Orleans," he told CNN in 2004.
Van Heerden said levees built to protect New Orleans from Lake Pontchartrain could be buffeted by waves from the lake, which is about 23 miles by 35 miles in area.
"You're going to have enormous waves develop on that lake, especially with as much as 14 hours of hurricane-force winds." Those waves will erode the levees, raising the possibility of their collapse, he said.
"This is what we've been saying has been going to happen for years," he said. "Unfortunately, it's coming true."
Rick Luettich, a professor at the University of North Carolina's Institute of Marine Sciences, compared Katrina's expected impact on areas far up the Mississippi to "grabbing the end of the bed cover and giving it a hard snap."
That snap will push "probably in excess of 10 feet" of floodwater up the river, he predicted. "It will propagate up the river like a wave," past Baton Rouge, more than 70 miles away, he said.
For 15 years, Luettich has been developing a hydrodynamic circulation model -- called AdCirc -- that he said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has endorsed to help emergency managers predict storm damage.
Apologizing for the possibility that his comment could be interpreted as somewhat ghoulish, he said, "This is, in some ways, a little bit exciting for us, because it's a real opportunity to test this technology we've developed and see how well it works."
Ignorance: Empowering the U.N. global 'peace' force
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge..." Hosea 4:6
By Darren Weeks
There's an old adage that says, You can always tell when a politician is lying; his lips are moving. George W. Bush moved his lips Tuesday, and the sewage could be smelled world-wide.
He tried to make the case that the war in Iraq is strengthening the U.S. and a withdrawal from Iraq by U.S. troops would serve to weaken our country.
I'll assert here that we have no military. There are no U.S. troops. It's a fallacy to suggest that we have a military.
The good men and women who believe they are joining the military to fight for freedom and national security, are in fact dupes who have unwittingly joined the U.N. global peace force, and are fighting to implement a new world order. They are the willing pawns in the bloody battle to neutralize the opposition to the world system.
Before you attack me with an avalanche of angry e-mails, I want to make it clear that I am not against those who honestly believe that they are serving their country by signing up for the Armed Forces. Though I admire their courage, I am unapologetic in my assertion that their efforts are not only misguided, but woefully ignorant.
Under the United Nations system, the military of every country is being eliminated. That is the purpose of the global war on terror. It is a U.N. operation, designed to eliminate any "rogue" nation that won't go along with the plan of a one world government, under the direction of the socialists at the U.N.
The U.S. State Department has long been infiltrated by socialist one-worlders. If you don't believe me, then ask yourself the question: Why are we sending our troops off to die in foreign countries, while we are leaving our borders open to invasion? Another question you need to ask yourself is: Why are we closing our military bases here at home, while opening new ones abroad?
The answer is that we have no military. It has been given to the United Nations, to do the work of the communist U.N.
In a speech in Baltimore, Kim R. Holmes, Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs, said:
"We have many international organizations in which to advance our foreign policy. And one of those is the United Nations, which is so prominent in the news today."
In other words, it is the purpose of the United Nations to advance the foreign policy of the U.S. Department of State.
"An ultimate goal of the United States is a world which is free from the scourge of war and the dangers and burdens of armaments; in which the use of force has been subordinated to the rule of law; and in which international adjustments to a changing world are achieved peacefully. It is the purpose of this chapter to provide impetus toward this goal by addressing the problem of reduction and control of armaments looking toward ultimate world disarmament."
It is the purpose of these four agencies at the State Department, to negotiate and enforce the disarmament of every country of the world. They call it "making the world safe for Democracy".
Prior to the beginning of the latest war in Iraq, we heard rhetoric from the White House about how Saddam Hussein had to disarm. We heard the world order mouthpiece at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue spout his company line about how Saddam had weapons of mass destruction and how he was a danger to the world.
In reality, Saddam wasn't a danger to the world. He was a danger to the World System that the malevolent, would-be dictators at the U.N. and at the State Department wish to establish. That is exactly why Saddam had to be ousted.
It had nothing to do with oil. We have oil in our country that the federal government won't allow the oil companies to touch. According to chaplain Lindsey Williams, there's so much untapped oil in Alaska, it's squirting out of the ground. Additionally, we have aging refineries and the federal government won't allow the oil companies to build more. In other words, we're being made dependent upon foreign oil in order to justify the wars. Everyone knows we need oil. When people think we're going to war for oil, they will sooner dismiss concerns that decision-makers are not acting in their best interest. This is especially true when they are paying over $2.50 a gallon at the pump.
Yet, oil is not the real reason for the wars; neutralization of the opposition to globalism is the real reason.
Saddam Hussein had to be ousted because he was going to do things Saddam's way. If the United Nations and the United States which are really one and the same are not successful at getting Iran to disarm, thereby ensuring their compliance with the U.N. system, Iran will be the next target in the global war on terror. That country will be overthrown, followed by Syria and North Korea.
The nations who have a mind for their sovereignty, are being disarmed. The rest are having their militaries transformed into the U.N. global "peace" force. Why else would the United States be shutting down military bases? Military bases are no longer needed when you no longer have a military.
The global "peace" force is designed to ensure that once the global totalitarian regime is established, there can never be a coup d'etat. The U.N. "peace" force will squash any uprising which challenges it. Furthermore, without a military or weaponry, a successful uprising cannot flourish.
It is with this thought in mind, that elimination of small arms in the hands of average people comes into play. A truly "peaceful" world can only be accomplished, if there is no resistance. There can be no resistance, when there are no weapons with which to resist.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said,
"Controlling the proliferation of illicit weapons is a necessary first step towards the non-proliferation of small arms. These weapons must be brought under the control of states, and states must be held responsible for their transfer."
Kofi Annan We the Peoples: The Role of the United Nations in the 21st Century United Nations Department of Information, 2000 pp. 52-53
We're going global, baby! And any country that won't come along for the ride, can expect to be blown to bits by the power-mad, demented despots who control U.S. foreign policy, and the well-meaning, well-deceived Americans in the Armed Services, who still believe they are fighting a war for freedom.
All of my sites, including this one, deal mainly with the problems that we face in America. I feel compelled to warn people that we are losing our country. It is a calling. I take no delight in it, other than the fact that I am doing what I can to prevent the disaster that is being thrust upon the once-free world.
Allies in this movement of truth-tellers are extremely rare. Many don't wish to listen or consider the ideas that we bring to these web pages, or the corresponding radio broadcasts. Though that reality can be discouraging at times, we don't give up on trying to get the message out.
One person who has listened to me, whenever I've told him about these issues, is my good friend Rob. He listens, asks questions, and learns. I give him websites, and he writes them down. In other words, when the majority of people don't care about what I have to say, Rob is interested in learning more. It is an attitude that is as refreshing as it is obscure.
Rob works in the entertainment broadcast industry, along with myself. We've worked together for many years. I've shared with Rob a lot of information about September 11. While anyone finds it hard to believe at first, Rob listened. Then, he went and saw Michael Moore's movie, Fahrenheit 911. While Moore is a socialist, his movie apparently (I have not seen it) contained a lot of the information that backed up what I've said about 9/11 being a U.S. government operation. It was an awakening for Rob.
Since that time, I have been able to introduce him to Agenda 21 and the concept of sustainable communities. He's even told me that he's been at a certain housing project where they were building sustainable housing.
He's shared with me his own frustration at trying to awaken his brothers to freedom issues, only to have them turn a deaf ear.
His willingness to learn about these issues, is deserving of tribute in my opinion. It is very therapeutic to those of us who do this, to have others awaken to the truth because of our efforts. When so many including our own relatives won't listen, it is always a blessing to encounter friends who care. Rob is one of the ones who truly does care.
While he is just starting to learn about freedom issues, Rob is very knowledgeable about entertainment and pop culture. Indeed, whenever someone asks me who a particular actor or actress is, I always say ask Rob, he'll know.
Entertainment isn't my forte. As a part of my job, I'm forced to endure shows like Entertainment Tonight and Extra. I often find myself wishing I could invoke my Constitutional protection against cruel and unusual punishment.
Though I've been known to write my own movie review, I must say that I don't care what brand of makeup Julia Roberts wears. It doesn't matter to me what young stud Demi Moore is dating. Though I feel sorry for any baby born to Britney Spears, I really don't want to hear about it. If I were the horse, I'd have probably kicked Madonna off too.
Recently, I introduced Rob to Blogger and told him that he should start his own website about entertainment issues. Having all of that knowledge in his head, it only made sense that he should share it with the world. To my surprise, he told me last Wednesday that he had done it.
Contrary to the controlled media's sickening celebrity worship, Rob's entries are interesting and insightful. He doesn't gush over an entertainer. If he thinks Johnny Carson was good, he simply says so.
As a tribute to my good friend, I present to you his website, the Show Biz Wiz.
He comments on television, movies, and everything entertainment. There's even a place at the end of every entry for you to post your comments.
Wire reports and the international media are reporting at this hour that China and Russia have launched their first joint military exercise ever on Thursday.
The operation is named "Peace Mission 2005" and involves 10,000 army, navy, and air force troops.
Even though Gen. Yuri Baluyevsky, the head of the Russian armed forces general staff, assured the press that the "exercises don't threaten any country", China's Xinhua news agency reports the purpose of the exercises are to strengthen the capability of the two armed forces to act jointly if necessary.
The Financial Times reported last month that a top Chinese official threatened to use nuclear weapons against the United States if it interfered in the event of a Chinese confrontation with Taiwan. The report said,
China is prepared to use nuclear weapons against the US if it is attacked by Washington during a confrontation over Taiwan, a Chinese general said on Thursday.
"If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons," said General Zhu Chenghu.
Gen Zhu was speaking at a function for foreign journalists organised, in part, by the Chinese government. He added that China's definition of its territory included warships and aircraft.
"If the Americans are determined to interfere [then] we will be determined to respond," said Gen Zhu, who is also a professor at China's National Defence University.
"We . . . will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds . . . of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese."
Gen Zhu is a self-acknowledged "hawk" who has warned that China could strike the US with long-range missiles. But his threat to use nuclear weapons in a conflict over Taiwan is the most specific by a senior Chinese official in nearly a decade.
Meanwhile, American consumers continue to enjoy low-priced goods on store shelves across the nation that have been shipped to our shores on communist Chinese COSCO ships, giving our enemies every tool they need to defeat us.
Children really have a way of putting things into perspective.
My wife, Michelle, had run out of gas the other day. I was just coming back from town, having rescued her. My two daughters Jessica, 10 and Hannah, 9 were in the car with me. They were chattering as usual.
It was a very nice evening; the evening dew had already started to fall. It gave way to a beautiful aroma. It was a fragrance that one usually smells just before a fresh rain.
Not ever being one to ignore an opportunity to ask a question, Jessica says to me, "What's that smell?"
"That's the smell of nature," I replied.
So then Hannah weighs in. "I've never smelled nature before," she said.
Jessica then retorted, "Get sprayed by a skunk and you'll smell nature!"
I laughed. "Nature" from the perspective of a child. We should all enjoy it while we can.
Gregory M. Lamb gives us this classic example of the Hegelian Dialectic. In the name of protecting you, we have to track you everywhere you go. It's the same old tired song. I keep wondering when Americans are going to get smart and reject it.
Bear in mind that when the social security system was crammed down the throats of Americans, they were promised that it would never be used as an identifier.
Now, the controllers are building on the foundation of the social security system to develop the next level of population control.
New Plans for an Old Number CBS News and the Christian Science Monitor August 10, 2005
Once they kept track only of who was eligible for old-age pensions. Today they're used to validate personal information for a multitude of transactions — from renting a video to opening a credit account to receiving medical care.
Seventy years old this month, Social Security cards, each with its unique identifying digits, have become an integral, nearly indispensable, part of American life and commerce.
But their increased use has also made the numbers valuable for identity thieves, who can use the information to empty someone's bank accounts or run up credit-card charges. As awareness of the problem has grown, Social Security numbers have begun to disappear from driver's licenses and other highly visible documents, and businesses are guarding them more carefully. Many people no longer carry their Social Security card in their wallet or purse.
While these efforts are laudable, privacy experts say, they're too little, too late. "Reducing the collection and display of Social Security numbers is a small help," says Robert Gellman, a privacy and information policy consultant in Washington, D.C.
"The vast majority of the American populace [already] has their Social Security number out where any identity thief can obtain it with remarkable ease," adds Timothy Sparapani, who tracks privacy rights issues for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Unlike a computer password, a Social Security number is difficult to change. The process usually involves persuading the Social Security Administration that you have been a victim of identity theft — and that you're not trying to hide from creditors or a criminal record.
There's much talk of legislation to limit the use of Social Security numbers by private industry, Gellman says, but inevitably various groups will ask for exceptions, and any new law is likely to be watered down. What legislation might profitably do, he says, is try to protect future Social Security numbers from being compromised. For numbers that already have been issued, it's "largely a lost cause," he says.
Scandals involving financial and other data lost by companies such as ChoicePoint, LexisNexus, and Bank of America have energized Washington to seek to help protect the privacy of Americans. But at the same time, a security measure born of the war on terrorism has yielded a new law that could become a "honeypot" for identity thieves, Sparapani says.
The Real ID Act, passed in May as part of a larger bill to fund U.S. troops in Iraq and tsunami relief in Asia, will turn state driver's licenses into what amounts to national identity cards by mid-2008.
But that's not its purpose, says the bill's author, House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R) of Wisconsin. He sees the act, which tightens the requirements to obtain driver's licenses, as aiding in the fight against terrorism. "The Real ID is vital to preventing foreign terrorists from hiding in plain sight while conducting their operations and planning attacks," said Sensenbrenner after the bill passed.
National standards for licenses, to be set by the federal Department of Homeland Security, are expected to be dramatically strengthened. Applications are likely to require several forms of identification, and information on the cards will be linked between states and the federal government. Life without one of these beefed-up licenses could be difficult: They'll be needed to board an airplane, visit any federal facility, or, in all likelihood, receive any federal services.
The act will "help to ensure that every driver is who they say they are," says Jason King, a spokesman for the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. The measure also makes traffic in fraudulent ID credentials a federal crime. Privacy experts, however, are concerned that the act requires that the cards contain a "common machine-readable technology" — and that's where privacy and data theft issues may arise, they say. This technology could be a simple magnetic strip, bar code, or computer chip, which would allow information to be collected from the card at a distance of several feet.
Merchants, for example, might ask for the cards as a form of identification and then electronically collect the data off them — name, birth date, ID number, photo, and perhaps more. Once a business has the data, it's "totally unrestricted what they can do with it," Gellman says.
The ACLU is urging Homeland Security to make privacy a high priority as it works out the specifics for the new driver's licenses, Sparapani says.
While state licenses are quietly on their way to becoming a de facto national ID card in the United States, both Britain and Australia are engaging in lively public debates on whether to introduce national identity cards. No Western democracy has instituted such cards for many decades, says Simon Davies, the director of Privacy International in London. The idea of national ID cards has "started to see a public backlash" in Britain as people learn more about it, he says.
"The institution of a national ID card raises fundamental questions about the relationship of power between the citizen and the government," he says.
In order to prevent identity theft and other misuse, such cards would need to have strong security controls, perhaps requiring a scan of a person's fingerprints or irises. "I can't see taxpaying Americans allowing themselves to be iris-scanned for an identity card," Davies says.
In a report to the British government in June, researchers at the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science said that both identity theft and national security might be better addressed by other means than through national identity cards, such as by giving individuals more control over who sees their personal information or by strengthening border patrols and supplying more funds for police investigations.
Current ID technologies are "untested and unreliable," the report said. An ID card, it concluded, "should be regarded as a potential danger to the public interest and to the legal rights of individuals."
I was honored to be Chris Gerner's guest on his broadcast on the Republic Broadcasting Network. It was an enjoyable hour with a lot of "information for decision making".
For those who wish to listen, it was the July 9th broadcast, and I was on in the second hour. The archives of the show are posted here.
Cleaning out some old papers, I happened across this little gem again. Thought I'd post it for all of you who are still not convinced that firearms in the hands of responsible individuals can only SAVE lives.
Outlaw guns and only outlaws will have guns, as this article serves to prove.
Gun ban 'utopia' creates violent crime increase; The cure is worse than the disease
In a pattern that's repeated itself in Canada and Australia, violent crime has continued to go up in Great Britain despite a complete ban on handguns, most rifles and many shotguns. The broad ban that went into effect in 1997 was trumpeted by the British government as a cure for violent crime. The cure has proven to be much worse than the disease.
Crime rates in England have skyrocketed since the ban was enacted. According to economist John Lott of the American Enterprise Institute, the violent crime rate has risen 69 percent since 1996, with robbery rising 45 percent and murders rising 54 percent. This is even more alarming when you consider that from 1993 to 1997 armed robberies had fallen by 50 percent. Recent information released by the British Home Office shows that trend is continuing.
Reports released in October 2004 indicate that during the second quarter of 2004, violent crime rose 11 percent; violence against persons rose 14 percent.
The British experience is further proof that gun bans don't reduce crime and, in fact, may increase it. The gun ban creates ready victims for criminals, denying law-abiding people the opportunity to defend themselves.
contrast, the number of privately owned guns in the United States rises by about 5 million a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The number of guns owned by Americans is at an all-time high, fast approaching 300 million.
Meanwhile the FBI reports that in 2003 the nation's violent crime rate declined for the 12th straight year to a 27-year low. The FBI's figures are based on crimes reported to police. By comparison, the U.S. Department of Justice reported in September that, according to its annual national crime victim survey, violent crime reached a 30-year low in 2003.
Right-to-Carry states fared better than the rest of the country in 2003. On the whole, their total violent crime, murder and robbery rates were 6 percent, 2 percent and 23 percent lower respectively than the states and the District of Columbia where carrying a firearm for protection against criminals is prohibited or severely restricted. On average in Right-to-Carry states the total violent crime, murder, robbery and aggravated assault rates were lower by 27 percent, 32 percent, 45 percent and 20 percent respectively.
As usual, most of the states with the lowest violent crime rates are those with the least gun control, including those in the Rocky Mountain region, and Maine, New Hampshire and Ver-mont in the Northeast. The District of Columbia and Maryland, which have gun bans and other severe restrictions on gun purchase and ownership, retained their regrettable distinctions as having the highest murder and robbery rates.
Got meat?
The Food Bank of Ukiah would like to put the word out to sportsmen and women that it is in need of protein for those who need food. Fishermen and hunters are being asked to donate any excess fish or wildlife they may possess. Donations would have to be cleaned and processed, the Food Bank does not have facilities to do this.
You may have some fish or game in your freezer that's nearing its keeping limit. The Food Bank would appreciate such donations very much. In fact, the Food Bank would prefer frozen food donations.
The Food Bank also would like to extend the invitation to pig, goat or cattle owners who would like some bread, fruit or vegetables for their livestock. An excess of these items is often available; instead of throwing it out, the Food Bank would be happy to give it to someone who can use it for their livestock.
The Food Bank of Ukiah is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and Saturday morning until noon. You may call manager Jeff Rogers at 462-8879, extension 122, for more information.
Fishing report
The ocean salmon season opened in Fort Bragg on February 12. The weekend showed good promise for the remainder of the season; anglers did well for this early in the season.
A California Department of Fish and Game biologist was checking in fish at the up-river launch area and had tallied 34 fish by 11 a.m. Party boats managed fair catches as well.
Sunday was even better for some. A good friend of mine and his crew landed limits of salmon. Most fish are running fairly small, but one party boat landed a 20-pound fish.
I drove by a "fisherman" neighbor's house last week and saw him hosing down six nice salmon he and his fishing buddies caught.
The outlook for salmon around Fort Bragg is great, although many of this year's fish will be scarce until April.
Lake Mendocino is reported to be 82 percent full. I question that. My first trip on the lake found most of the stick-ups, brush piles and fish habitat high and dry. Looks to me like the lake needs another 10 to 12 feet of water, in order to give the fish ample spawning opportunities and the cover they need to hide from predators.
Stripers were marked on my "fish-finder" sonar all over the lake. It was another thing to get a strike from them. I finally hooked and landed two. They were small, but I was encouraged by the bite this early in the year.
The environmental propagandists have really topped themselves now. If we are to believe them, things are now so bad on earth, that you can see the damage from space! Everyone repeat after me: THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING!
HOUSTON (Reuters) - Commander Eileen Collins said astronauts on shuttle Discovery had seen widespread environmental destruction on Earth and warned on Thursday that greater care was needed to protect natural resources.
///snip///
"Sometimes you can see how there is erosion, and you can see how there is deforestation. It's very widespread in some parts of the world," Collins said in a conversation from space with Japanese officials in Tokyo, including Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
"We would like to see, from the astronauts' point of view, people take good care of the Earth and replace the resources that have been used," said Collins, who was standing with Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi in front of a Japanese flag and holding a colorful fan.
Collins, flying her fourth shuttle mission, said the view from space made clear that Earth's atmosphere must be protected, too.
"The atmosphere almost looks like an eggshell on an egg, it's so very thin," she said. "We know that we don't have much air, we need to protect what we have."
Let's think about this, for a moment. These astronauts can actually see the trees (or lack thereof) from space? With the naked eye? We're supposed to believe that these astronauts were out doing their little space walk, making repairs, and happened to notice that the earth had too few trees? They noticed that we have a lack of air on earth?
Beijing (Financial Times) Nearly 10,000 troops are to take part in unprecedented joint military exercises by China and Russia this month aimed at strengthening ties between the armed forces of two powers that were once bitter foes.
Chinese state media said yesterday the “Peace Mission 2005” exercises would be held from August 18-25 in and around the Russian far eastern port of Vladivostok and the Chinese coastal province of Shandong.
The scale of the exercises, which will involve land, air, naval, paratroop and marine forces, underlines the determination of Beijing and Moscow to expand a military relationship that has blossomed over the past 15 years.
Russia is now China's leading source of high-technology weaponry, while the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has become an important source of foreign currency for the crumbling Russian military industrial complex. “The drills mainly aim to deepen Sino-Russian mutual trust, promote mutual friendship and enhance the co-operation and co-ordination of the two armed forces in the areas of defence and security,” China's official Xinhua news agency said.
Xinhua said about 1,800 troops from Russia would take part in the exercises along with vessels of its Pacific fleet and 17 long-range military cargo planes. “The joint exercises will also help strengthen the capability of the two armed forces in jointly striking international terrorism, extremism and separatism,” the agency said.
The reference to separatism will heighten concerns about the exercises in Taiwan, which enjoys de facto independence from China but which Beijing claims as part of its territory. Chinese and Russian officials have insisted the drills are not aimed at any third party. The choice of name for the exercises and the decision to characterise them as aimed against terrorism also reflect Beijing's desire to avoid fuelling wider worries about its emergence as a military power.
A much-watched report by the US Department of Defence last month suggested the PLA's growing clout may tempt Beijing to use force against its neighbours and that it could pose a “credible threat” in the long term to other militaries in the region.
The planned exercises set the seal on a dramatic shift in Sino-Russian ties since the late 1980s.
Some people in China say much of the Russian far east rightfully belongs to Beijing and territorial rivalry has underlain diplomatic ties for more than three centuries. Under former communist governments the two countries espoused rival brands of Marxism and fought bloody battles along their common border.
In recent years, China and Russia have worked hard to resolve differences on territorial issues, although some observers say their military marriage is still largely one of convenience.
